Travelling around Sicily is a journey of discovery as visitors never cease to be amazed at the island's diversity. In the end, they find that the island’s most precious jewel is the well-known destination of Taormina. Taormina is in the north-east of Sicily, positioned high on a promontory overlooking the Bay of Naxos. Founded by the early inhabitants of Sicily in 753 BC, it is known as the 'Ionian Pearl' thanks to its stunning natural scenery and Greek amphitheatre. With the many artists and cinema stars who came here in the 19th and 20th century, it also has a reputation as a destination for the 'elite'.
A break in Taormina offers visitors a perfect mix of culture, nature and beach life. The town covers only 13km yet offers a wide range of hotels, bars and shops where you can buy local Sicilian products as well as designer clothing and accessories. Whether you come from the historic port of Messina or from the Port of Catania, encountering the historic centre of Taormina for the first time is always an emotional experience. Stroll along the length of the main street to soak up the unique atmosphere, and see the mix of extravagance and classic styles.
Don't miss the famous Greek amphitheatre, the Teatro Antico, and its spectacular view overlooking Mount Etna and the Bay of Giardini Naxos. Nature lovers will find plenty to see with both the Alcantara Gorge and the Isola Bella (beautiful island) nearby. Those who enjoy socialising will be spoilt for choice with the packed programme of dancing and music organised by Taormina Arts Society and appreciated by both locals and visitors alike.
